Iogi-machi was a small town on the western edge of Tokyo that officially existed for just forty-three years, from 1889 to 1932, and whose name has since vanished from addresses and maps. It repays a visit all the same: this article follows five stories, from a mayor's street grid to a doomed statesman's villa and a bronze Gundam, that show how a farming district became a modern suburb. It also tells you which corners to seek out on foot.
