Wong Tai Sin district

Lion Rock names the spirit of Hong Kong. It has also been borrowed — three times, by three different political projects — as a source of authority over the people in its shadow. This is a walk through the ground it watches over, and through five histories most visitors never find.

Wong Tai Sin district

This is a long-form historical walk through Wong Tai Sin District in eastern Kowloon, built around five lesser-known histories: the resettlement programme that made the district, the factory strike that nearly broke the colony, the squatter village that was replaced by a Buddhist garden, the estate that failed the people it housed, and the mountain whose symbolic authority every government has borrowed. Readers will leave with a different understanding of what this district carries — and a route for walking into it themselves.
