Wadahori-machi 和田堀町
In Tokyo's Suginami Ward, one name lived as a town for only six years: Wadahori. On its ground a Yayoi-period tomb, a shogunate powder store, the dead of Tsukiji and the pipes that fed the capital took turns. Five documented stories show how a quiet residential district came to hold them.
This is a historical travel story and a walking route through Suginami Ward, in western Tokyo. It follows five places in what used to be the town of Wadahori: a shrine grove with Yayoi-period tombs, a pilgrim temple, the site of a powder magazine, a cemetery moved from central Tokyo, and the road above a water main. By the end you will know what lies beneath this ordinary district, and you will have a route you can walk.
